What is Stutter Speak? |
Stutter Speak is the passion project of two students, Jonah Ableman and Robert Eads, at the University of Michigan and Texas A&M University respectively. Developed over the course of the summer after their freshman year, the project came to fruition when the two decided they wanted to try to use their technological abilities to help other people. After Jonah pitched the idea of a VR application to help mitigate the fear of speaking in public, Robert, a stutterer himself, challenged Jonah to take it one step further and presented the idea to specifically help people who stutter. The two took their idea to Tricia Krauss-Lehrman, a certified speech pathologist, to sponsor the project and provide guidance and advice along the way. Tricia agreed to help out and thus, Stutter Speak was born.
The application itself is a public speaking simulator. Using Virtual Reality to put you in the moment of giving a speech, Stutter Speak can help prepare you for the real deal. It's not just a simulator though. When you use Stutter Speak over time, you will be able to see and track your progress in many different ways to help you prepare. This provides you the opportunity to grow and improve your fluency, and more importantly, your comfort with the way you sound.
